20 Weeks - It's a...

We had our 20 week prenatal appointment a few weeks back. Two days after the appointment I left for Seattle and am just now getting around to blogging about it all. This appointment was a BIG milestone for us. Dr. W told us after we lost Baby B that my pregnancy was considered high risk, however, if I could make it to 20 weeks without any new complications then they would then consider me a normal “singleton” pregnancy. (“Singleton” is actually the term they use!)

The 20 week appointment is a big milestone for any pregnancy since this is when the anatomy scan is done. They check the babies head, neck, spine, heart, arms and legs for any potential birth defects or diseases detectable through ultrasound. This is also when you typically can find out if you are expecting a boy or girl. I was having a little bit of anxiety the morning of our appointment. Everything had been going so well over the last few weeks and I didn’t want that to change! I knew this appointment had potential to reveal the things you don’t want to hear and as much as I wanted the reassurance that everything was going to be ok, I wasn’t sure it would be. We also still hadn’t decided whether we were going to wait to find out the sex of the baby or if we wanted them to tell us.

Well, we got great news! Our baby looks perfectly healthy, is growing at a slow but still healthy rate and I am officially back to a “normal” pregnancy status. Whew! We got lots of great ultrasound pictures and even a DVD with video footage of the scan. That was a great surprise! She gave us quite a show, moving around her arms & legs, and even opening and closing her mouth at one point. She’s adorable!

That’s right… she is adorable! We also found out we’re having a baby girl!

But don’t worry, I’ll spare you the pictures that prove it. Even though it’s pretty impossible to tell what you’re looking at, I still don’t like the idea of putting a picture of our babies genitals online. Gonna start teaching her the value in modesty as early as possible! I know she’ll thank me later.
